Aromatherapy is rooted in century-old practices of aromatic medicine and herbalism, alchemy, chemistry, perfumery and pharmacy. Modern aromatherapy, which took shape in the 1930’s, plays a significant role in modern wellness, namely by utilizing the profound power of aromatic botanical extracts (essential oils) to influence mood and overall health. Among the myriad of essential oils used in this practice, Neroli oil stands out for its exceptional mood-enhancing properties and historical significance.

Neroli: A Citrus Flower with Noble Roots

Neroli oil, extracted from the fragrant blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var amara), has a rich history. Its name hails from the 17th-century Princess of Nerola of the Orsini family of Italy, who popularized its use as a perfume to scent her bath and notably, leather gloves. To that end, it is historically linked with Grasse, France and the historical perfumers’ guilds that emerged from the “gantiers-perfumers” (glover-perfumers).

Neroli: One of the Few Essential Oil Florals

Most flowers’ chemistry is too fragile to withstand the heat and steam demanded by the traditional distillation process used to obtain genuine essential oils. Neroli is one of the few true flowers of aromatherapy, alongside Rose, Ylang ylang and German and Roman Chamomiles (and a few others). Yet it all comes with a price; Neroli essential oil is expensive and often adulterated or poorly distilled (e.g., including parts other than flowers). It takes an average of ~1,000 kg of fresh Neroli flowers to obtain a kilo of Neroli oil.

Neroli Chemistry

The oil is notably rich in linalool, linalyl acetate, and limonene, chemical components that contribute to its distinct floral and citrus fragrance and therapeutic actions. Since Nerola’s time, Neroli has been a staple in perfumery as a key botanical in eau de cologne formulations as well as the fashionable leather gloves worn up into the 18th century.

Neroli Oil for Stress Reduction

The impact of Neroli oil on mood and physiological states has been the subject of various studies. For example, research published in the International Journal of Nursing Practice suggests that inhaling Neroli oil can significantly reduce stress, uplift mood, and stabilize blood pressure. The calming effect is attributed to its influence on the brain’s limbic system, particularly the amygdala, which is crucial in processing emotions.

Neroli Oil for Sleep Enhancement

Beyond its mood-altering capabilities, Neroli oil offers a spectrum of therapeutic benefits in aromatherapy. It’s a natural remedy that addresses both mental and physical well-being, supported by scientific research. These benefits include reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and enhancing mood. A study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, for instance, indicated Neroli’s ability to lower cortisol levels, thus reducing anxiety. Its sedative properties, as highlighted in the Journal of Complementary Therapies in Medicine, are effective in improving sleep and combating insomnia.

Neroli Oil’s Versatility

Neroli may be enjoyed in various forms: inhaled through diffusion, directly from the bottle or one drop on a cotton pad; applied topically when blended with carrier oils such as sunflower and sesame or added to a warm bath. These methods cater to individual preferences and ensure that the full therapeutic potential of Neroli oil is accessible in a manner that suits different lifestyles and preferences.

Blending Ideas with Neroli Oil

In aromatherapy, Neroli oil is valued for its versatility and ease of use as a single botanical or blended with other essential oils to amplify and complement its therapeutic qualities, notably stress reduction and enhanced sleep quality, mainly through olfaction and diluted topical application.

For these specific applications, Neroli blends exceptionally well with other citrus and florals such as Lavender, Ylang ylang, Jasmine, Rose, Clary sage, Marjoram, Bergamot and Sweet Orange.

Here’s a blend that clients and I have loved over the years. Add to a 10ml roller ball or 1 ounce mood mist or smell 1 drop on a cotton round for 3 minutes, daily.

  • 5 drops Neroli
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Ylang ylang
  • 1 drop Rose Geranium
  • 1 drop Marjoram

The Importance of Enjoying Neroli’s Aroma

Hot topic! Be sure the individual you’re working with enjoys Neroli’s aroma (or any oil, for that matter) or is neutral about it. If someone doesn’t like an oil they are working with, the therapy is likely to be diminished. Scent perception, reception, recognition and memory association are important and not to be discounted!

Is Neroli Oil Safe?

While generally safe, it’s important to exercise caution with Neroli oil (and all essential oils!), especially in topical applications. Diluting it with a carrier oil is essential to prevent skin irritation. A patch test is also recommended to rule out potential allergic reactions. This is important as Neroli is a helpful essential oil for skin care. Dilution is a must!

Neroli: An Invaluable Tool for Stress Reduction

Regular incorporation of Neroli oil into your daily routine can offer a straightforward, yet effective, approach to leveraging the benefits of aromatherapy. Its ability to alleviate stress, enhance sleep, and uplift mood renders it an invaluable tool for those seeking emotional and psychological balance. Whether you’re new to aromatherapy or a seasoned practitioner, the unique characteristics and historical significance of Neroli oil make it an outstanding choice for enhancing holistic health and well-being.

In conclusion, Neroli oil represents a blend of historical wisdom and modern science, offering a natural, holistic approach to improving mental and physical health. Its versatility, efficacy, and delightful aroma make it a favorite in aromatherapy circles, suitable for anyone seeking a natural way to enhance their quality of life.
