This is a companion post to Essential Aromatica — Season 5, Episode 11, “Hekate: The Key of Recognition.” In this episode, I explore Hekate as a force of thresholds, perception, and passage through mythology, seasonality, and three aromatic companions: Angelica Root, Nagarmotha, and Galbanum.

Hekate Beyond the Witch
Hekate is often remembered as a goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, and magic. Her older story is far more expansive.
Before she became associated with witchcraft and darkness, Hekate was understood as a powerful and benevolent force who moved freely across sky, land, sea, and underworld. She was a goddess of thresholds, protection, civic life, perception, and passage between worlds. Her hounds alert. Her torches illuminate. Her keys grant access.
Recognition, Perception, and Feminine Power
For much of my life, I’ve been interested in mythology, archetypes, and the ways feminine figures are shaped by culture. This year, as I deepened my exploration of goddess-forces such as Hera, Demeter, Lilith, and Hekate, it became increasingly striking how often once-sovereign figures were diminished, misunderstood, or reduced to a small part of their larger nature. The question that continues to follow me is this: why were powerful, sovereign feminine forces separated from their wholeness, and what remained in the aftermath?
For years, I felt Hekate was larger than the cultural “patron of witches” caricature. More complex. More whole.
That’s because she is.
Earlier this year, while searching for scholarship on Hera, I discovered Monstrous Bitch: A History of Terrifying Women by Eleanor Johnson. The book had not yet been released, so I preordered it and waited. When it finally arrived, I was in the midst of deepening my relationship with Hekate. The timing was synchronistic. Eleanor Johnson’s work arrived as a thoughtful companion, offering historical and contemporary context for understanding how and why powerful feminine figures became, and continue to be, belittled, feared, and reduced.
Three Aromatic Companions for Crossing Thresholds
The episode also explores three essential oils that have accompanied me for years. I first encountered Galbanum and Nagarmotha during a major transition in 2012, and for reasons I could not fully explain, I kept returning to Angelica Root. Long before I connected any of these plants to Hekate, I was already in relationship with them. They became companions and teachers I repeatedly turned to over the years, each offering a different perspective on the qualities Hekate embodies. This exploration of Hekate brought these three essential oils together in a way I had not previously recognized.
• Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica): companion, witness, guide.
• Nagarmotha (Cyperus scariosus): descent, rootedness, presence.
• Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua): movement, commitment, passage.
A Poem for Hekate
I close the episode with a poem, also shared below, written the morning after spending contemplative time in my garden beneath a nearly full moon.
The Passage
by Amy Anthony
Hounds rest on the path
Aconite, Actaea stand
Autumn listening.
Moon through redbud limbs
Silver gathers on the web
Owls answer the dark.
At the garden gate
The key to the mystery
Nothing was missing.
